'Full Red Alert': Hezbollah Ponders Gaza Role

Print PDF

By Franklin Lamb – Beirut

"The Resistance is one project and the resistance movement is one movement and has one course, one destiny, one goal, despite its different parties, factions, believes, sects and intellectual and political trends…Resistance movements in this region, especially in Lebanon and Palestine, complement one another and (Hezbollah and Hamas) are contiguous groups." -- Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, 7/18/08

"Gazans won’t maybe die in airstrikes anymore but may still starve to death due to the ongoing siege"

Palestinian National Initiative, 20 January 2009

Ramallah, 20-01-09: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, the Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, spoke out against the faulty unilateral ceasefire declared by Israel.

"What ceasefire?" he asked, "Israel is still reportedly bombarding Palestinians from the sea, and though the troops have been moving back, they are not gone and retain the permission to instigate more violence at will."

Who Are the Terrorists?

People of Israel, you claim that your religion holds life in the highest esteem, yet everyday your soldiers kill the children of Palestine.

Daily, their young bodies, draped in the Red, White, Black and Green flags of their beloved homeland, are paraded down the main streets of Palestine, carried aloft in a Hero's Farewell, to their final resting place.

Each day another Palestinian mother weeps as her child is buried in sacred soil, shot down in the most horrific manner.

Lucky we were to have fled imminent death as more than fifteen F-16 rockets bombarded the tunnels area where we had lit a fire the previous night to drink tea and talk story about life in the tunnels. Many houses were partially destroyed due to the heavy bombardments, but no casualties were reported.

South of the Gaza Strip, a very strange phenomena is taking place. People are racing time, using primitive ways to get food and achieve a good life. The people in the Gaza Strip, the most densely populated area in the world, are forced to face death in order to attain life's basic necessities. This is against all humanitarian laws, and the rights of these laws were stripped from the Gazans by Israel. Border crossings were closed as a tightened siege was imposed two years ago.

Consequently, a complete paralysis hit the agricultural, medical, economical, and all sectors of life. People were trapped in a large concentration camp called Gaza, and they are still, where no one is allowed to get in or to get out. Students are deprived from their education abroad. Three hundred patients died due to the inability to travel for treatment, while some others died due to lack of medicine altogether. There is no gas for heating, and power cuts are frequent. The Gazans were pushed to use alternatives to get life back after the Israelis robbed them of basic necessities. The alternatives were an amalgamation of fear, freedom, death, and life. They started to dig tunnels that linked Gaza with Egypt in order to bring what Israel had made taboo for the Palestinians.

In the sixties and seventies, some tunnels had already been excavated for the smuggling of jewelry and food, and this trade flourished when Hamas came into power in mid-2007. Now more than two thousand tunnels have been dug through the borders to reach Egypt, each varying from 100 to 1,200 meters. Thousands of people began to work as daily laborers in order to bring sweets, animals, flowers; basic things, for without these tunnels people would be starving and would have nothing. Ultimately, they are used to drag food into the Palestinian side because these people are trapped inside Gaza as the crossings are closed. These tunnels are their source of life. On the contrary, working in them automatically makes them an associate with tragedy, and it is a frequent visitor. It is a hazardous operation where more than one hundred out of these thousands of laborers died, and they are still dying.

US rejects Israeli demand to back down on freezing settlements

Print PDF

Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies

Israeli sources reported that the United States administration insists that Israel should fully freeze settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territories, and on its demand that Israel should open border terminals in the Gaza Strip in order to allow Gaza reconstruction.

The US position came during Tuesday talks in London, led by the Special US envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, and other US diplomats, with Israel’s Atomic Energy Minister, Dan Meridor, and a number of advisors to the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

An Israeli official said that settlements construction and expansion in the occupied territories must continue due to what he described as natural growth of population.

He failed to mention that the Palestinian population is now confined into small isolated ghettos without any chance for expansion due to natural population growth.

The Israeli officials participating in the talks said that Israel will not accept to completely halt settlement construction and expansion, and claimed that the Palestinians did not fulfill their part of the Road Map Peace plan by “failing to counter terrorism”.

The American delegates refused the Israeli suggestions, especially regarding the settlement issue, and insisted that border terminals in the Gaza Strip should be open to allow construction materials and humanitarian into Gaza.

Yet, Netanyahu stated that he wanted to speed up the reestablishment of the special ministerial committee in charge of illegal outposts issues so that the removal of 22 illegal outposts built after March 2001 can be carried out.

Netanyahu’s talks on the 22 illegal outpost was seen a matter of technicality as those outposts are considered illegal even under the Israeli law, but he was not willing to hold talks on dismantling Jewish settlements and settlements blocs illegally constructed in the occupied West Bank and in east Jerusalem, as all settlements are considered illegal under the International Law and constitute a war crimes.

Settlements also violate the fourth Geneva conventions to which Israel is a signatory. Article 49, paragraph 6, of the Fourth Geneva Convention states; "The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."

During a press conference with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Ahmad Abu Al Gheit, US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, called on Israel to stop its settlements activities, and added that the Obama administration wants to achieve a comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

Clinton added that that Obama was clear during his meeting with Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and told him that Israel must halt all of its settlement activities in the occupied territories, even what Israel described as natural growth.

Well Said!

“Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere... and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.”

- Edward Said

This brief review of Israel’s record over the past four decades makes it difficult to resist the conclusion that it has become a rogue state with "an utterly unscrupulous set of leaders". A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism - the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. Israel’s real aim is not peaceful coexistence with its Palestinian neighbours but military domination. It keeps compounding the mistakes of the past with new and more disastrous ones. Politicians, like everyone else, are of course free to repeat the lies and mistakes of the past. But it is not mandatory to do so.

We are these human rights observers, aid workers, and journalists. We have years of experience volunteering in Gaza and the West Bank at the invitation of Palestinians. But now, because of the increasing stranglehold of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine, many of us find it almost impossible to enter Gaza, and an increasing number have been refused entry to Israel and the West Bank as well. Despite the great need for our work, the Israeli Government will not allow us in to do it.
